"When I look in the mirror, I find myself in error."
Mirror Stage: Me in Error? is Lindy Lin’s long-term feminist project that blends personal audiovisual reflections and reconstructions of the male-gazed "mirror stage" with collaborative, "imperfect" improvisations. These improvisations follow the instruction Mirror Stage: Perfect Score, taking the form of intimate duets with artists who identify as female, trans, non-binary, and/or gender-fluid.
Through both vertical deconstruction—tracing the history of herself and women—and horizontal deconstruction—examining the body of herself and women—Lin deconstructs and re-embroiders her identities. This process is carried out through field recordings, everyday objects, and media: the liberation of women’s bodily and vocal expression through screaming, singing, chatting, movement, and behavior; the breakdown of the masculine Chinese flute Xiao; the redefinition of female combs and clips; deep listening to water and an Icelandic glacier; and the manipulation of fabric and visual art.
Lin’s work seeks to create an organic, interactive platform for female artists to engage, listen, and support one another on the "mirror stage." By embracing "awkward" and imperfect practices, Mirror Stage: Me in Error? challenges traditional mirror systems and conventional notions of femininity.
